God is eternal. He offers us eternal life. “He has made everything beautiful in its time. He has also set eternity in the hearts of men; yet they cannot fathom what God has done from beginning to end.” Ecclesiastes 3:11 niv "For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son,that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” John 3:16 niv God has set eternity in our hearts. All peoples long to be immortal. We even have science fiction movies about immortality and time travel. We want to be free from the confines of time… like our Living, Extraordinary God is. He has set eternity in our hearts… and through the death and resurrection of Jesus—eternal life is ours by grace through faith. God is eternal. God is, God was and God is to come. "I am the Alpha and the Omega," says the Lord God, "who is, and who was, and who is to come, the Almighty." Revelation 1:8 niv “Whenever” you are, God is then. He is here now. He was there before you were born. He will be there at the end of your life. He is always there when we need Him. He does not grow tired, or sick or old. He lives on in perfection. God is eternal. His purpose will stand. “Remember the former things, those of long ago; I am God, and there is no other; I am God, and there is none like me. I make known the end from the beginning, from ancient times, what is still to come. I say: My purpose will stand, and I will do all that I please. Isaiah 46:9-10 niv God is like no other. He has known the end before the beginning. He did not face a crisis when Adam and Eve rebelled. He was not overwhelmed during the flood of Noah’s day. “But the plans of the LORD stand firm forever, the purposes of his heart through all generations.” (Psalm 33:11) He is able to work out His will today in our lives and through us. God is Eternal. He has no “beginning… He is the beginning. “Before the mountains were born or you brought forth the earth and the world, from everlasting to everlasting you are God.” Psalm 90:2 "I am the Alpha and the Omega, the First and the Last, the Beginning and the End." Revelations 22:13 niv God has always been. He is the first and the Last. He did not have a start. He is outside of the confines of time. He created the sun which is how we judge day and night, the seasons and our years. He is the Ancient of Days. Our days are so few— we are here for such a short time compared to the eternal God. All things exist through Jesus and are sustained through His Power. “For by [Christ] all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things were created by him and for him. He is before all things, and in him all things hold together.” Colossians 1:16-17 niv All things were made by Jesus and for Him. If we think any less of Jesus, we aren’t really thinking of Him at all. We are all here because of Him, for Him and for His glory. It is due to the life of Christ that there is any life at all. In Him we find both spiritual and physical life. God is self-sufficient. God does not lack anything. “For as the Father has life in himself, so he has granted the Son to have life in himself.” John 5:26 niv God does not “need” anything. He can create with the word of his mouth, for, in the beginning, when He spoke everything came to be. He does not even have need for companionship as He has perfect fellowship within the Trinity. God relates to us not out of a place of need, but out of His abundance. God is self –existent. God was never made or born. He is “self-caused”. God said to Moses, "I am who I am . This is what you are to say to the Israelites: 'I AM has sent me to you.' " Exodus 3:14 niv There is nothing else in my life that I come across that had no beginning. We often talk about “where things come from”… but when we turn our minds to God, we must bow in awe at His throne He is the one like no other… He did not begin and will never end. God is good. All He does is good. After Samuel shared with Eli that the Lord was displeased with Eli’s sons and that they were going to die... ...Then Eli said, "He is the LORD; let him do what is good in his eyes." 1 Samuel 3:18 niv Sometimes we are frustrated because we can not fully understand God, and therefore can not predict exactly what He will do. Some things about God are a mystery. Some he chooses to make known… some he does not. Eli took the position of faith. He is the Lord, let Him do what is good in His eyes. God is more than we can imagine. The created mind can not fully comprehend God and his abilities. He is literally more than we can imagine. Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, for ever and ever! Amen. Ephesians 3:20-21 niv Our minds are limited by time, space and even capacity. The moment we do imagine God, we have limited Him. God and His love, mercy and forgiveness surpass our ability to really comprehend. As Ephesians 3 says: that we may know a love that surpasses knowing…God’s power within us surpasses knowing. God is Other. God is not “just like” anything else. The Creator can not be fully described using “creature” language. "For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways," declares the LORD. “As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.” Isaiah 55:8-9 niv When we attempt to think about what God is like, we have to stand in awe and wonder. We need to remember He is not just like us or the people around us. He is not petty, fickle or selfish… He is “higher”, “other”. He is Holy. Prayer: Lord, please help me to understand more deeply about Your many great and wondrous qualities that I as a human can hardly even grasp.
